Now it makes sense

why I can't get a prn position at a certain lab in NC.

Students from a two-year polysomnography course are being hired at a nearby lab for $10/hr. This makes me want to scream. Do these same students think that when they pass their registry exam in 6 months that these type of labs are going to give them a $10+/hr raise or what?

Just venting but would enjoy reading what others think other than "I told you so". :(

Hmmmm well if they will work for $10/hr then you will have to move to another part of the state.

Nah James, these $10/hr student techs can't score, do lousy titrations if they can do them at all and must work under the supervision of a RPSGT. Once they get registered, it will likely be THEM that will be moving to find a better paying job.

Who the hell would go through two years of school to work for $10/hour? I mean, I made that waiting tables, working 28 hours/week. Ridiculous. They deserve their pay for being stupid. Sorry it affects you Gizmo.

I can make more money than that by stripping on the weekends. And I don't mean paint.

You'd be giving up your weekends though. Do it during the week and we'll be impressed

They're students who will be graduating in May. Many work for minimum wage right now. So it's a win/win situation I suppose. Let's see if the lab keeps them once they are RPSGT's ... they will have to double their pay. I think they'll let them go and hire more students for $10/hr.

I have been saying for a long time now pay will be going down. There are a lot of labs in our area that are dropping their pay to new employees, my lab being one of them. I am not forcing anyone to come work for us and they will know what they are going to get paid before they accept the position. With the reimbursements going down, labs can not afford to pay registered techs $25 an hour any more. Our current techs will not loose pay but any ne ones will start considerably lower.

i was FT at a lab a little over a year ago. before i resigned the position, i asked the administrator to consider a PT position for me because i can work any shift, and i do not need medical benefits, just the guarantee of PT hours. i told her that with HST and healthcare reform, reimbursements will most likely drop and that i would be a good investment. she said no, that they will post my FT position for a new hire. that same fool is now considering 8:3 tech ratios to save money.

O.o what labs are these? I need to make a note to NOT apply there when I graduate in may.

Although I do not know the exact labs your talking about see it all of the time during my clinical rotation... I don't think its going to get any better, unfortunately.
