just wanted some opinions

It's been a long time since I've posted anything on here...so I just wanted to start off by saying hello.

I'm currently studying for the exam, and plan on taking it by the end of this month. I'm strictly a scoring tech, but do other duties like performing MSLT's, and MWT's, scheduling patient's, ordering patient equipment, doing mask fitting's, etc. I have been in the field for almost 10 years now, and have taken the exam 3 times before and failed! Well I'm back at it again.

If and when I pass my test...would you think it's fair to ask for small raise? I have not been given a raise in 6 years!!!! I'm just afraid that by me asking, my employer will say I don't deserve a raise as I'm not doing the night shift.

I just wanted some opinions...thank you!!

Oh and I just wanted to add...we had a daytime tech who passed the exam. She had asked for a raise....and our employer let her go, because she wasn't doing the duties of what a night tech does to be getting paid for an RPSGT.

I would keep my head down and shut up till they recognize the daytime duties are part of the RPSGT duties...if you are doing RPSGT duties during daytime. Are you? Was the other person too?

Yes, I am doing RPSGT duties during the day...the other person was just scheduling and seeing patients. Well if I keep my head down and keep shut, they may NEVER recognize the duties...just like they have been. Like I said it's been 6 years without a raise, and I've worked my ASS off doing a lot for this place. I'm the only one who can perform MSLT's and MWT's, and I've actually helped out in getting this place up and running when it opened. Once I pass, I know that I can go elsewhere, which in this case I may have to.

If your rate of pay is recognized as lower because you lack the credential, then I would submit that by passing your exam you should be entitled to a raise.
That being said it is really up to your employer and whatever agreement you have made with them.
It is somewhat surprising that a tech was fired by virtue of asking for a raise, but if her job category wasn't a sleep tech, then she wouldn't get a raise at my lab either. She might get offered a job depending on her candidacy for such job.
it sounds like to me you work for a independent lab or doctor owned lab rather that a hospital based lab, in which case I say
Get the credential and go where you are appreciated!
Good luck with the exam

Respbarb-yes I do work for a doctor owned lab. That's exactly what I plan on doing...is passing my exam and going else where. Thank you both for your opinions!!

Night techs deserve more money than day techs.

My current lab protocol is only RPSGTs can score a study. It wouldn't make much sense to have a RPSGT do the night time study and have an unregistered tech score and print the final reports. I think all techs should be registered in any lab with the exception being a tech who is working toward the credential but that's not the case with most labs. Most hire only the one needed RPSGT to remain with the AASM because unregistered techs make less the registered techs, which brings up your situation. If you pass the exam, you should get a raise. If they fire you because you passed the exam and don't want to pay you RPSGT money then check with you local laws and take action against them. It seems they did this before in the past. Your director seems to be all about the money. No raises, firing techs who pass the exam so he doesn't have to pay RPSGT money. Just wondering, how many beds does you lab have and how many RPSGTs are on staff?

I'm not even asking for a big raise...just a couple of dollars and I'd be fine. I guess I'm just a little butt hurt that they don't see how long I've been here and how dedicated to this place I am. I just hope that I pass!! just passing the exam will make me happy!!

sorry I forgot to answer your questions...it's a 4 bedroom lab, and there is no RPSGT's here! I'd be the first, and I'm the only one who's eligible to sit for the exam. Our other techs have been here about 4, 5 years...but no one's bothered to try taking the exam. Come to think of it...I don't think any of them finished any of their A-step modules when it was mandatory. I think like me they have given up on it...they put in their minds...well if we're not going to get a raise then why bother.
