No Current Conversations on AAST?

Postby respbarb » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:37 pm

I have been thinking about the future of our field and looking at the recent discussions on different forums and social media. Does it mean something that the forums on AAST have not had one single conversation in this calendar year yet?

A single "conversation" or any post at all?

Or...maybe there have been posts/conversations, but they were taken down because the AAST did not like them.

There haven't been any. I check from time to time and have not seen a single one. I was looking about a week or two ago and was considering posting one post just to have a post posted - but I decided against it. Didn't want to mar the perfect loneliness of it all.

I'm all for furthering education, learning, and growing professionally. However, there are already people doing most of the things in this "new" area of the field. Taking 75% of the people in the field (techs running studies) and funneling them into an already existing job area that is already pretty much filled is not going to do much for us. It all looks nicey nice on paper that techs are being trained for "new" jobs in the field, but if these jobs are pretty much already filled, not a whole lot is going to be accomplished for us as a group. The main result will be an overload of people available for the same job (which will remain limited in availability), which is not going to help anyone.

I still say, this new credential is training to put yourself out of work. Like Vix is saying, other more appropriately licensed and credentialed people are doing what in the end is billable, but not by CCHS credentialed people. There will never be a billable outlet for the end point of the work via this credential, so in effect, you are training for a supposed position that will not be forthcoming since it cannot pay its own way.
It makes no sense whatsoever to train down this path as a "tech."
