FRONTAL LEADS

Does anyone know the logic behind F3 & F4 additions to the montage for PSG and titrations?

Based on some studies, it was felt that SWS is better "recognized" in frontal leads. No one mentioned how we are supposed to retro-fit the standard for voltage historically obtained from Central sites to the new higher voltage SWA in the frontal sites. Oy.

Their rationale is pretty much laid out in the complementary Review articles for the scoring manual

These studies suggested that K complexes were maximally represented with frontal electrodes (2 studies), sleep spindles maximally with central electrodes (2 studies), and delta activity maximally with frontal electrodes (2 studies)

There's been plenty of times that I've seen K's in the Frontal leads but not in the Centrals.

Are we still supposed to only score off the centrals though?

I have specifically asked the AASM about this type of issue.
The response is:
"Slow waves should be measured from F4.
It doesn’t matter if F3 is also on the screen."
And other conversations I have had with them I have extracted...
Sleep onset from Occipital only.
Non-SWA Staging from Centrals and/or Frontals (K's, spindles, vertex, etc.)
