Reagan fought a proxy war with the Soviet Union by training, arming, equipping, and funding Islamist mujahidin fighters in Afghanistan. Reagan funneled billions of dollars, along with top-secret intelligence and sophisticated weaponry to these fighters through the Pakistani intelligence service. The Talbian and Osama Bin Laden — a prominent mujahidin commander — emerged from these mujahidin groups Reagan helped create, and U.S. policy towards Pakistan remains strained because of the intelligence services’ close relations to these fighters. In fact, Reagan’s decision to continue the proxy war after the Soviets were willing to retreat played a direct role in Bin Laden’s ascendancy.

No, the US's decision to pull out and not build schools, and provide infrastructure led to Afghanistan's issues and led to the rise of Laden. Slate? Really? Bahahahaha

Bud, you got homework to do. Lol The Soviets tried to occupy Afghanistan, and Osama Bin Laden helped the revolt. He was in charge of gathering Muslims to help the revolt.

UNI,
You are not getting your "FAX" (read facts) from FOX central so you are not singing from the deluded hymnal. Pulling away the curtain leads the great and powerful Ronnie Raygun to be shown as the piece of shit he truly was. From BEFORE he actually took office he was committing treason and did so right through his terms. He was an terrible actor and even worse president. Hinkley should have aimed better, then GHWB have gotten what he trained Hinkley to do, give him the Presidency, nice and easy.

The right are the fascists left over from WWII. Please tell Tom Brokaw that The Greatest Generation were not that great since they left a bunch of fascists still alive and now them and their kin are occupying the GOP.

First off, you are completely wrong about the CIA training them.

Under Operation Cyclone from 1979 to 1989, the United States provided financial aid and weapons to the mujahideen through Pakistan's ISI. Bin Laden met and built relations with Hamid Gul, who was a three-star general in the Pakistani army and head of the ISI agency. Although the United States provided the money and weapons, the training of militant groups was entirely done by the Pakistani Armed Forces and the ISI.

By 1984, with Azzam, bin Laden established a Saudi Arabian funded organization named Maktab al-Khadamat (MAK, Office of Order in English), which funneled money, arms and Muslim fighters from around the Arabic world into the Afghan war. Through al-Khadamat, bin Laden's inherited family fortune[11] paid for air tickets and accommodation, dealt with paperwork with Pakistani authorities and provided other such services for the jihad fighters. In running al-Khadamat, bin Laden set up a network of couriers traveling between Afghanistan and Peshawar, which continued to remain active after 2001, according to Rahimullah Yusufzai. It was during this time that Bin Laden met his future al-Qaeda collaborator, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, a member and later head of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad.

CNN journalist Peter Bergen, known for conducting the first television interview with Osama bin Laden in 1997, calls the idea "that the CIA funded bin Laden or trained bin Laden ... a folk myth. There's no evidence of this. ... Bin Laden had his own money, he was anti-American and he was operating secretly and independently. ... The real story here is the CIA didn't really have a clue about who this guy was until 1996 when they set up a unit to really start tracking him."

He didn't go all crazy against America until we didn't leave Saudi Arabia after we were asked to take care of Kuwait, after he was rebuffed.

And this is what I was talking about man....
Once the Soviets withdrew, US interest in Afghanistan slowly decreased over the following four years, much of it administered through the DoD Office of Humanitarian Assistance, under the then Director of HA, George M. Dykes III. With the first years of the Clinton Administration in Washington, DC, all aid ceased. The US decided not to help with reconstruction of the country, instead handing the interests of the country over to US allies Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Pakistan quickly took advantage of this opportunity and forged relations with warlords and later the Taliban, to secure trade interests and routes. From wiping out the country's trees through logging practices, which has destroyed all but 2% of forest cover country-wide, to substantial uprooting of wild pistachio trees for the exportation of their roots for therapeutic uses, to opium agriculture, the ten years following the war saw much ecological and agrarian destruction.[144]

Captain Tarlan Eyvazov, a soldier in the Soviet forces during the war, stated that the Afghan children's future is destined for war. Eyvazov said, "Children born in Afghanistan at the start of the war... have been brought up in war conditions, this is their way of life." Eyvazov's theory was later strengthened when the Taliban movement developed and formed from orphans or refugee children who were forced by the Soviets to flee their homes and relocate their lives in Pakistan. The swift rise to power, from the young Taliban in 1996, was the result of the disorder and civil war that had warlords running wild because of the complete breakdown of law and order in Afghanistan after the departure of the Soviets.

As you said:"Under Operation Cyclone from 1979 to 1989, the United States provided financial aid and weapons to the mujahideen through Pakistan's ISI." My point exactly! When you provide the money and weapons for training a Terrorist organization, that makes you responsible.

Osama bin Laden makes it fairly clear why he wanted to attack the United States in his own writings. Bin Laden declared war on the United States all the way back in 1996, 15 years before before the 9/11 attacks, in the statement, "A Declaration of Jihad against the Americans Occupying the Land of the Two Holy Sanctuaries." "The Land of the Two Holy Sanctuaries" refers to Saudi Arabia, which is the home of the two holiest cities in Islam, Mecca and Medina. In the military preparations before the Gulf War aka Operation Desert Storm, King Fahd agreed to allow U.S. troops into Saudi Arabia so that American military forces could use the country as a pathway to get into Kuwait and force out Saddam Hussein.

Bin Laden's opposition to the United States stems from bin Laden interpreting the American military presence in Saudi Arabia as an insult against Islam. Bin Laden's declaration of jihad against the United States states:

"All the false propaganda about the supposed rights of Islam was abandoned in the face of the attacks and massacres committed against Muslims everywhere, the latest and most serious of which--the greatest disaster to befall the Muslims since the death of the prophet Muhammad--is the occupation of Saudi Arabia, which is the cornerstone of the Islamic world, place of revelation, source of the Prophetic mission, and home of the Noble Ka'ba where Muslims direct their prayers. Despite this, it was occupied by the armies of the Christians, the Americans, and their allies."

Bin Laden was never a poor Afghani tribesman. Bin Laden was born in Saudi Arabia, and he had a large personal fortune, because his father got extremely wealthy from going into the construction business in Saudi Arabia. In terms of nationality, Osama bin Laden viewed himself as a Saudi and felt especially insulted, both on religious and nationalistic grounds, when the United States deployed troops in Saudi Arabia in preparation for the Gulf War. Bin Laden's connection to Afghanistan is that he fought with the Afghan mujahideen in the 1980s to drive Soviet troops out of Afghanistan, but at that time, the mujahideen were unofficially allied with the United States, because of the U.S./U.S.S.R. rivalry during the Cold War.

Bin Laden fought against the Soviet Union and won. If you pull off that, it's not unthinkable that you might believe that you could pick a fight with the United States and win that too.

Oh, and shame on me for not watching FOX news. Lmao

Its very interesting from ACA to Afghanistan
After 5 pages very nice conversation nice conclusion
ACA now is a law . Do you liked or not its a law now
Only time can show its work or not. If this system work its fine if not change
But at list we need to try
Second about Afghanistan
This country as tribe country live with own tribe law
We never learning any lessons from world history
This tribe land defeated everybody who try control this [place
From Alexander Great to present time. Actually only one personal learning this was.... Lenin ,he sign peaceful agreement 1921 with Afghanistan and before 1977 its work great.
This land live under sharia law many hundred yeas and when we try change this law . Or try improvement from our point view
created what we have now . .. Taliban and more fundamental more conservative tribe law
This land extremely rich with oil, gas, metal almost everything from periodic table. Not only opium
Look this publication in Bloomberg magazine"Afghanistan's Minerals Await Vital Railroads"
Tribe law is very different . I presume not you Somno or UNISOLGR33
leave or work here . So I was here .
So to understand this law or traditional sharia law its not very simple
This tribe land can accept trade or negotiation as traditional part of local culture but not pressure or sword. Its why they never give up BIn Laden
under tribe law
We need take our military staff from this land ,before go worse
May be time help healing wound in this land

Mark the date - many will bow in prayer of remembrance for the greatest president of the 20th century. This will mark the 10 year death date of our beloved Ronald Reagan

All the problems with the Unaffordable Slut Act remain unfixed - even unfix able. perhaps the main barrier to doing anything positive for HealthCare is this administrations complete vale of secrecy. The current liar in the White House proclaimed he would preside over the most transparent White House in history. This is so torturously untrue as to make even stalwart Dems run for cover as the Midterm ass beating approaches this fall

We have heard that the reason for the 38th change and delay for the deadline is due to data gathering personnel being held up while they finish counting votes for Putin on the Crimea referendum. BTW I heard that Putin read Cosmonaut's post about exhuming Reagan's body and called nervously to find out if this was true. lol So the latest delay institutes an attest button that has no oversight and requires no corroboration. This is the standard for the Sotero regime. Of course - if your intent is to "transform" the USA into a banana republic - then this would be SOP (standard Obama procedure)

My dear socialists in sleep - I extend an invitation to you. Embrace your inner adult. Denounce your marxism. Throw away your hammer and sickle. Join us in rebuilding America
